The Weatherford Economic Development Authority, Inc. (WEDA) and the Weatherford Chamber of Commerce co-hosted the 6th Annual Industrial/Manufacturer Appreciation Luncheon on February 25, 2011 at the Doss Heritage & Culture Center with over 100 attendees.
The lunch and program were provided through generous community sponsors including; Main Event Sponsors - First Financial Bank and Jerry Durant Auto Group; Program Sponsors - PlainsCapital Bank, Weatherford Democrat - Parker County Business Index, Fort Worth Community Credit Union, Prudential Texas Properties, and Weatherford Electric; Event Sponsors - Hooks Lincoln-Mercury, State Bank Weatherford, Century 21-Judge Fite Company, Ashley Conlon, Weatherford Economic Development Authority, Inc., and Weatherford Chamber of Commerce.
The annual event continues the 6th annual recognition of the Industrial /Manufacturer "BUSINESS OF THE YEAR" in 3 employment size categories; Large: Silverado on the Brazos Equestrian Center; Mid-Size: Southwest Fluid Products, Inc.; and Small: Weatherford Recycling & Supply. These businesses are recognized for their outstanding growth achievement, community involvement, unique product innovation / marketing and outstanding employment practices. The awards were presented by Drive. Deborah Cron, Vice President of the WEDA Board, Debra Smith, Chairman of the Weatherford Chamber of Commerce and Craig Swancy, WEDA Board Member/City Councilman.
In addition to the three "BUSINESS OF THE YEAR" awards, the Business Retention and Expansion, "BRE VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR" was also acknowledged. This year there was a tie between two committee members: Jeannie Leonard, Diamond L Ranch and Claudia Bowden, Account Manager of North Central Texas Work Force were awarded a plaque for their outstanding efforts to retain and recognize existing businesses through monthly visits by volunteers to our existing industrial/manufacturing and commercial businesses. The BRE (Business Retention and Expansion) committee meets monthly and routinely visits existing businesses to express appreciation and to recognize them for being the foundation of the Weatherford economy.
This year the WEDA Business Leadership Committee hosted a joint event, the 1st Annual Weatherford ECOSummit, a full morning session with over 80 attendees that included a DFW/State Economic Outlook & Review by Drive. Terry Clower, Director of the Center for Economic Development & Research at the University of North Texas - Denton; a Local Economic Review and Business Outlook community round-table; a presentation on "Is New Urbanism Sustainable Urbanism", by Mr. Mike Malone, AIA Architect of Dallas; and a Strategic Planning Workshop 101 facilitated by Mr. Tom Stellman, President of TIP Strategies, Inc. of Austin.
