1. What is the “ISO”? What is the City of Weatherford’s ISO rating?

The ISO (Insurance Services Organization) is an advisory organization and the principal provider of rating and statistical information used by the insurance industry in the United States. Quality of public fire protection is one of the items of statistical information the ISO provides to the insurance industry. Under the PPC (Public Protection Class) program, the City of Weatherford has achieved a rating of 3 on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the most desirable rating. Lower homeowner’s insurance rates are available as a City increases its PPC rating. In the fall of 2006, the City of Weatherford’s rate increased from a 5 to a 3.

2. Can I burn a pile of leaves and limbs? Can piles of brush from the clearing of land be burned?

Due to State of Texas regulations, control burns are no longer allowed inside the City of Weatherford. After April 30, 2003, it became illegal to perform any type of control burn within the city limits, including burning of cleared materials such as brush.

3. I just drove past a fire hydrant that is gushing water. Is it broken?

The hydrant is probably not broken but the Fire Department appreciates the public notifying us of such an event. From time to time, the city’s utility department will “flush” hydrants. In most cases, a gushing hydrant indicates that preventive maintenance is being performed on the hydrant. If you wish to report the hydrant, you may contact the Utilities Department or the Fire Department.

4. Does Weatherford have a Volunteer Fire Department?

Our department is both a Paid and Reserve Department. The Weatherford Fire Department Reserves was formerly known as the Weatherford Volunteer Fire Department. Its membership consists of 15 firefighters who volunteer their time and service. Applications may be obtained from the Administrative Office at Station 1.

5. How can I set up a tour of the fire station?

The Weatherford Fire Department welcomes visitors to tour our stations. For large groups or specific dates and times, we request that you contact the Department at least one week before the day you would like to visit. We can normally accommodate all requests, however, due to training, maintenance, and inspection activities, we request that you call ahead. Arrangements can also be made for our firefighters to visit daycares, schools, senior care centers, and other facilities.

6. I am hosting a special event and I’d like a Firefighter to come speak to our group. Is anyone available for such an event?

Yes. Our department is committed to ongoing public education and will be happy to send a representative to your function. Please call the Administrative Secretary at 817-598-4280 at least a week prior to schedule your event.

7. How can I dispose of used paint and motor oil?

Motor oil can usually be disposed of at most automobile parts stores and lube businesses, however, there may be a charge for this service. The lids of latex paint buckets may be removed, the paint allowed to dry completely, and then disposed of with regular household waste. Mercury thermometers may be dropped off at any fire station.

8. Does the Weatherford Fire Department offer CPR classes?

No, not at this time.

9. Can I get my blood pressure checked at the fire station?

Yes. Our firefighters will be happy to assist you. Please visit any of our stations between the hours of 8:00 am to 6:00 pm for this service.

10. Does the Weatherford Fire Department recommend a specific smoke detector?

We do not recommend a specific brand of detector. Be sure when purchasing a smoke detector that a UL label is affixed.

11. Can I get assistance installing my smoke detector and changing the batteries in my smoke detector?

If you should need assistance with installation of a smoke detector or changing the batteries of a smoke detector, please call 817-598-4280

12. Do you have free smoke detectors available for city residents?

From time to time various businesses and organizations will donate smoke detectors to our department for distribution to home owners who are senior citizens or who are financially unable to purchase them. Please call if you need a smoke detector!

13. My neighbor has tall, dry grass and weeds that I am afraid may become a fire hazard. Who do I contact?

To report a nuisance or hazard of this nature, please call the Code Compliance Department at 817-598-4349.

14. How do I obtain a fire report?

Reports of fire incidents are available to the public by request. Please call Fire Department Administration at 817-598-4280 and request a report. Because the reports are computer generated, please notify the Fire Department in advance if you wish to obtain a copy, especially if the incident occurred prior to the year 2001. Please provide us with the date, time, and street address of the incident. The cost of a general report is $5.00.

15. I’ve been calling, but no one is in the office.

If you have an emergency, hang up and dial 911.

Administrative office hours are from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Monday to Friday. During those hours, we make every effort to make sure that someone is available to answer the Administrative telephone lines. However, there may be times when the telephones are extremely busy and there may be a delay in answering your call. After regular business hours, a firefighter will answer your call if they are not responding to an incident.

16. My child has started several small fires recently. Is there anything I can do to deter him/her from doing this again?

Your child may benefit from a visit to our fire station, where he/she can have a one-on-one conversation with firefighters about the dangers of playing with fire. Early attention to this problem is extremely important. Our Fire Marshal also actively participates in the Juvenile Firesetters Intervention Program. 17. Can fireworks be used in Weatherford?

No. Except for authorized public displays, fireworks are illegal to possess or discharge inside the city limits of Weatherford.

18. Which station covers my neighborhood?

You may call any of our stations to determine which station provides coverage for your home or business.

19. Do you have volunteer programs for children?

No, not at this time.

20. Where can I find brochures relating to fire safety issues?

We keep a small supply of brochures, coloring books, stickers, and other educational materials at Station 1 to promote fire safety and 911 education.

21. Can you help me find a street not shown on the City map? Where do I obtain a street address for my new home/business?

The Weatherford Fire Department assigns addresses for all locations inside the City limits of Weatherford. Weatherford is growing rapidly and many streets have not been inserted on the maps yet. Please call us at 817-598-4280 to obtain addressing and street information inside the City limits of Weatherford.
