OUR HISTORY

The Weatherford Police Department has a humble beginning, dating back to the early 1900s. According to the City’s earliest records, Weatherford employed a single paid night patrolman around 1905. That role was held by B.R. Barker, who served until the spring of 1919 when he was appointed as Weatherford’s first Chief of Police. Upon his appointment, two more patrolmen were hired—one working days and the other nights—officially marking the formation of the Weatherford Police Department.

By 1951, the department had grown into an eight-man team under Chief Bert Reynolds. Resources were limited in those days, with just two patrol cars shared among all the officers. Despite the modest start, the department steadily expanded as Weatherford developed into a thriving bedroom community for the growing Fort Worth area.

Over the years, the Weatherford Police Department has evolved to meet the needs of a changing city. We’ve embraced advancements in technology, expanded specialized units, and prioritized community-based policing strategies that keep our citizens safe and engaged.

In 2022, we proudly celebrated the opening of our state-of-the-art Public Safety Building. Spanning more than 37,000 square feet, the new facility was designed with the health, safety, and wellbeing of our personnel in mind—now and for years to come. It currently houses 63 sworn officers, 20 support staff, and 5 fire administrative personnel, reflecting our commitment to growth, professionalism, and service to the community we’re proud to protect.
