Shelter Statistics and Reports

The Commitment

The Weatherford Parker County Animal Shelter (WPCAS) remains committed to maintaining a Live Release Rate (LRR) of 90% or higher, a benchmark we have consistently exceeded since 2015.

In Fiscal Year 2024, WPCAS serviced approximately 8,600 animals and finished the year with a Live Release Rate of 94%. Despite the ongoing challenges facing shelters nationwide in the post-COVID era—including increased intakes, veterinary shortages, and a slowdown in adoptions—WPCAS continues to uphold its lifesaving commitment to the animals and community we serve.

Key initiatives supporting this success include:

  • The Whisker Wednesday program, which aims to spay/neuter 1,200 cats over the course of a year to reduce overpopulation.

  • An expanded Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program, helping manage community cat populations humanely.

  • Enhanced partnerships with rescue groups and foster networks, which allowed 1,314 animals to be transferred out of the shelter in FY2024.

  • Increased field reunifications, reducing intake and helping lost pets return home more quickly.

While WPCAS consistently meets or exceeds the industry standard for what is defined as a “No-Kill” shelter, we do not adopt the “No-Kill” label. We believe in transparency, responsible sheltering, and serving both animals and the community with compassion and integrity.

Transparency and Data-Driven Decisions

At the Weatherford Parker County Animal Shelter (WPCAS), every animal receives individualized care and consideration with the goal of being reunited, rehomed, or rescued. To guide these outcomes, shelter staff rely on real-time data tracking and in-depth analysis to evaluate trends, identify gaps, and implement strategies that save the most lives.

WPCAS is firmly committed to transparency and accountability. Our team reviews intake, outcome, length of stay, and return-to-owner metrics daily, using this information to shape policies, improve processes, and better serve both animals and residents.

The chart to the right demonstrates how our data-driven strategies—combined with community support and lifesaving programming—have helped WPCAS maintain a Live Release Rate (LRR) of over 90% for nine consecutive years, despite national trends showing increased challenges for municipal shelters.

Whether adjusting intake processes, enhancing return-to-field protocols, expanding spay/neuter access, or targeting adoption promotions based on kennel population trends, every decision made at WPCAS is rooted in data and driven by compassion.
