Frequently Asked Questions About eBooks and eAudiobooks
Where does Weatherford Public Library get its digital materials?
The library is a member of the North Texas Libraries on the Go Consortium, which purchases materials in digital format from OverDrive. OverDrive provides the software needed to download and use digital formats on your computer and portable devices.
What’s the difference between an eAudiobook and an eBook?
eAudiobooks are recordings of the book being read, usually by an actor or other professional performer. eBooks are reproductions of the printed books that are designed to be read on electronic readers, such as the Amazon Kindle and the Barnes and Noble NOOK.
What equipment and software do I need to access eAudiobooks?
You will need either an Internet-connected PC or Mac, or a mobile device with the OverDrive or Libby app. OverDrive apps and other software are free for your use. At www.ntexlibrariesonthego.org, click the ‘Help’ link at the top right side of the page, then scroll down to the ‘Getting Started’ icon on the next page. Scroll down the page to find the correct software for your equipment. You may also listen to eAudiobooks directly from your browser.
PC users can download eAudiobooks from the North Texas Libraries on the Go website or listen through a web browser (such as Chrome or Internet Explorer). The OverDrive app must be used to transfer the eAudiobook to a portable audio player. Mobile devices running the OverDrive or Libby apps may download eAudiobooks directly.
What are the differences between the OverDrive app and the Libby app?
The original OverDrive app is still available, but OverDrive has recently released a far more functional app called Libby. Libby has iPhone, Android, Windows 10, and Windows 10 mobile versions available. Libby features much simpler login and checkout processes, the ability to link several different library cards to your app, and renew checkouts (as long as no one else has placed a hold on the item). The only feature it doesn’t have yet that the old OverDrive app has is support for languages other than English. Will I be able to use the computers at the library to download eAudiobooks and eBooks?
Not at this time.
What portable devices work with OverDrive downloadable audiobooks?
Many different devices are supported. At www.ntexlibrariesonthego.org, click the ‘Compatible Devices’ link at the left side of the page, in the ‘Getting Started’ section to see if a particular device has been verified to work with OverDrive.
How many eAudiobooks are available?
As of the date of this publication, 5,305 OverDrive eAudiobook titles are available.
What equipment and software do I need to access eBooks?
You may read eBooks directly from your web browser or download them directly onto your mobile device using the proper app. If you want to download the eBook to your computer, you will need an Internet-connected PC or Mac with Adobe® Digital Editions software. You will be prompted to download Adobe® Digital Editions when you try to download an eBook. What portable devices work with OverDrive eBooks?
Many different devices are supported. For assistance with your particular device, please visit http://help.overdrive.com/#devices.
How many downloadable eBooks are available?
As of the date of this publication, 16,141 eBook titles are available.
What do I need to sign up for an OverDrive account?
You will need a 13-digit Weatherford Public Library account number (the number on the back of your card must begin with ‘21014’). Please stop by the library’s checkout desk for a free updated card if your card number does not have 13 digits.
How can I find items to check out?
You may search for eAudiobooks and eBooks directly through the library catalog at http://catalog.mypcla.com, through the North Texas Libraries on the Go website at www.ntexlibrariesonthego.org, or through the OverDrive or Libby apps.
How many items will I be able to check out at one time?
You will be able to check out three downloadable items at one time.
Will I be able to request items if they are checked out?
Yes. You will be able to place hold requests for up to three downloadable items at a time. If an item displays the OverDrive Advantage symbol (a lower-case letter "a" with an yellow checkmark) then that means that the Weatherford Public Library owns copies that are exclusively for the use of its cardholders, although the waiting list count shows the total number of requests for the entire consortium. You need to sign in to be able to see Weatherford Public Library's OverDrive Advantage items. How long will I have to listen to/view my eBooks or eAudiobooks?
For most items, you will be able to choose a checkout period of seven days or fourteen days. All items may be returned early. If you have trouble returning materials early, please contact a librarian at 817-598-4155 or libinfo@weatherfordtx.gov. You may not renew a digital item unless you use the Libby app. However, if there are no holds for an item you may check it out again once your initial checkout period expires.
Are there late fees on digital materials?
No. OverDrive digital materials are protected with digital rights management (DRM) software and will become locked and unusable after your checkout period expires. You will not have to do anything to “turn in” your downloaded materials.
