Floodplain Management

Development in the floodplain must be carefully reviewed to ensure that no adverse impacts will occur to properties upstream and downstream of a proposed development and to preserve the natural environment.  If development were to occur in floodplain areas without thorough analysis and review, the capacity of creeks and drainage ways could be reduced, causing flooding and erosion.

The City of Weatherford participates in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), a federal program administered by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).  Participation in the program allows for the citizens of the community to obtain flood insurance through the NFIP.  As part of the City's participation, the City must enforce additional requirements beyond that of a typical development to reduce the risk of damages to properties during a flood event.  As such, a Floodplain Development Permit is required for any development proposed within the floodplain.  Please refer to the City's Flood Damage Prevention Ordinance for permit procedures and more information.

To determine if your property is within a floodplain, you may obtain official FIRM maps at the FEMA Map Service Center.  You may also use an interactive floodplain map with FEMA's National Flood Hazard Layer (NFHL) Viewer.  Feel free to also contact the Public Works office anytime to view copies of the floodplain maps in person.
