Lost/Found Pet

What to do if you LOST a pet:

If you have lost your pet, please come to the shelter during normal business hours (Tue - Fri 11am - 6pm and Saturday 11am - 4pm) so a staff member may walk you through the shelter to look for your animal. We are required by law, to hold a stray pet for 72 hours.

You may also look at the Stray Animal map below that shows where pets that are currently at the shelter were picked up from. If you click on the dog/cat icon on the below map it will give more details about the found animal and show you a picture.

You can also see a current list of all animals at the shelter by visiting our Shelter Dashboard page

If you do not find your animal when you come to the shelter, please email us a picture of your lost pet to animals@weatherfordtx.gov with any identifying details, location where your pet was last seen and your contact information. We also recommend posting your pet on petcolostlove.org as they are a free national, central database for lost and found pets that uses image recognition technology to identify possible matches for both lost and found pets. You may also call the shelter at 817-598-4111 and a staff member will do their best to check the shelter for your pet. However, the staff does not know your pet like you do and animals are constantly coming into the shelter, so it is always recommended that you physically come in to look for your pet.

On top of looking at the shelter for your pet you will want to hang missing flyers of your pet around the area he/she went missing and in local Veterinary Clinics. We also recommend posting your animal on as many social media sites as possible. There are several sites dedicated to helping people find their missing pets.

Also, if your pet has a microchip, please call the chip company to ensure that they have your correct information. WPCAS offers microchipping for only $20 per animal and its quick and easy. Call 817-598-4111 to schedule your pet to be microchipped. Most vets also offer this service.

What to do if you FOUND a pet:

If you have found a pet and it is friendly, please take it to the nearest vet clinic or animal shelter to have him/her scanned for a microchip.

If the pet has a microchip the clinic or shelter will make every attempt to contact the pets' owners.

If the pet is not friendly or appears sick or injured, please DO NOT attempt to pet or pick up the animal. You will need to contact your local animal control office to pick up the animal. If you are inside the city limits of Weatherford, Aledo, Hudson Oaks or Willow Park please call the Weatherford Parker County Animal Shelter at 817-598-4111. If you are outside the city limits but reside in Parker County, please call the Parker County Sheriff Department at 817-594-3213

If the pet does not have a microchip, you may either leave the animal at your local animal control shelter or elect to hold the animal while searching for his/her owner. If you choose to hold the animal, you need to make every attempt to locate the owners. This includes leaving your contact information along with a photo of the animal with your local animal shelter. We also recommend posting the pet on petcolostlove.org as they are a free national, central database for lost and found pets that uses image recognition technology to identify possible matches for both lost and found pets. You may also go door to door in the area where you found the animal, post found pictures in the area and post on your local neighborhood media pages and other social media pages. If the owner is found, you must return the animal.
