Lead & Copper Rule
LEAD & COPPER RULE
In an effort to reduce the presence of lead and copper in drinking water, the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued new guidelines for monitoring lead and copper in public drinking water across the country. These guidelines, called the Lead & Copper Rule Revisions (LCRR), require water systems to document/inventory their service line materials by October 16, 2024.
Water service lines are small pipes that transport water from the City of Weatherford's main water lines to individual homes and buildings. Ownership of the service line is shared between the city and the property owner. The city owns the section from the water main to the water meter, the property owner is responsible for the pipe from the water meter into the property and all internal plumbing. These lines can be made from various materials, including plastic, brass, copper, cast iron, ductile iron, lead, or galvanized steel (which may contain lead). Homes built before 1988 could have lead pipes, those built after 1988 should not (due to plumbing code changes).
When water leaves the City of Weatherford Water Treatment Plant, it is free of lead and meets Federal and State quality/safety standards. However, lead can enter drinking water through plumbing within your home or from the service line. If your service line contains lead, it can leach into the water when it sits for an extended time, such as overnight, posting a health risk to users.
Under the LCRR, the city must identify service lines that could contain lead, covering both city-owned and customer-owned portions. The City of Weatherford currently has no known lead service lines, efforts to determine the material of all service lines (city owned and customer owned portions) are ongoing. An Initial Lead Service Line Inventory has been completed and is published below.
The City of Weatherford is committed to continuing our record of drinking water compliance.
